Mixed breeds often show behaviors from several parts of their heritage. Start with the breeds you see most, then explore the groups below.
Sporting Mixes
Sporting breed mixes often inherit the friendly, eager-to-please nature of their retriever, spaniel, setter, or pointer ancestors. If your mixed breed loves water, carries objects, and greets everyone like a long-lost friend, you may have a sporting mix.
Herding Mixes
Herding breed mixes often show the motion-sensitivity and control behaviors of their collie, shepherd, or cattle dog ancestors. If your mix stares intensely at moving things, nips at heels, and seems to herd your family, you likely have a herding mix.
Terrier Mixes
Terrier mixes often display the tenacity, independence, and prey drive of their earth dog ancestors. If your mix digs, chases small animals, and never backs down from anything, you may have a terrier mix.
Hound Mixes
Hound mixes often inherit the nose or eyes of their scent hound or sight hound ancestors. If your mix follows their nose obsessively, bays at interesting smells, or chases anything that moves, you likely have a hound mix.
Working Mixes
Working breed mixes often show the strength, guarding instincts, and protective nature of their mastiff, guardian, or draft dog ancestors. If your mix is powerful, territorial, and naturally protective, you may have a working mix.
